The deadline to submit an application to participate in the upcoming peer specialist certification training program is February 29, 2012.  Sponsored by the District of Columbia Department of Mental Health, the seven week certification training course is for current or former consumers of mental health services who have an interest in supporting individuals diagnosed with mental illness.  To be eligible, an applicant must be a District resident and at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. Selections will be announced by May 12. The training program begins on June 6.

The peer specialist certification training program consists of 70 hours of classroom instruction and 80 hours of field experience at a community based mental health provider.  Following graduation from the program, a certification examination must be passed.  Participants in the program will learn how to help individuals receiving mental health treatment develop goals, monitor their own progress and advocate for effective services.  Each participant will receive a stipend of $100.00 each week.

The Department of Mental Health encourages community mental health providers to include peer specialists in their workforce.  The certification training program helps prepare individuals to apply for available peer specialist jobs and establishes a standard for performance.  Under general supervision, a certified peer specialist performs a range of tasks to help individuals gain control over their lives and direct their own recovery process. A peer specialist also is a model for personal recovery and ongoing coping skills.

To apply, please use the Peer Specialist application or email Rossene.minard@dc.gov  or call (202) 673-4377.  A resume, evidence of education—a high school diploma, high school diploma, GED or equivalent—and two letters of reference (at least one of which is work or volunteer related) must be submitted with the application.  The last day for submitting an application is February 29, 2012. Fax to (202) 673-3433 or email to Rossene.minard@dc.gov.  No application will be considered after this date.
