APA accreditation provides public notification that an institution or program meets the standards of quality set forth by the profession of psychology’s accrediting body. It provides a sense of trust to the public and highlights the professional quality of the institution and program.

Regaining accreditation for the psychology internship program was identified as one of the reform initiatives of the new hospital administration when it took office in January.

“National accreditation restores confidence in the strength of St. Elizabeths’s training program,” said Dr. Patrick Canavan, Chief Executive Officer.  “And, it assures students that our program is engaged in continual review and improvement efforts to help them deliver high quality care for the mentally ill.”

St. Elizabeths has a 150-year history as a training institution for many disciplines.  Its clinical psychology internship program has been continually accredited since 1956—one of the first in the nation. Hundreds of students from local universities and across the country have been trained at the Hospital.
