Department of Mental Health Director Participates in 2008 Urban Mental Health Initiative Symposium

Stephen T. Baron will join a panel of experts in a discussion on mental health treatment within urban communities.

Stephen T. Baron, Director of the District Department of Mental Health, will join a panel of experts on November 15, 2008, in a panel discussion on mental health treatment within urban communities. The two-hour program, which will taped before a live audience at DC TV from 3 pm to 5 pm, is sponsored by The Aalia Group, Inc. and Raising Expectations, Inc., a District based youth arts enrichment organization.

The panel will discuss complex issues confronting mental health professionals and consumers including disparities in access, undiagnosed symptoms, de-stigmatizing mental health disorders, and appropriateness in clinical care based on race and ethnicity.

Other panelists are: Joy Degruy, PhD, author, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome; Ray Winbush, PhD, Director of the Institute for Urban Affairs at Morgan State University; Imam Johari Abdul Malik, MS Human Genetics, Community Outreach and Communications; Dr. Pedro Martinez, MD, Researcher, National Institutes of Mental Health, and Vernethia K. Williams, President, Baby Steps to 2Health.

The panel will be moderated by Dr. Pamela Brewer, Host of MyndTalk Radio, WPFW 89.3 FM.
 
In addition, public service announcements on these issues will be premiered during the program.
